Basil

Ocimum Basilicum (Basil Essential Oil)

With a fresh, spicy, herbaceous aroma, this is a lovely gem of an oil that made an appearance in several of my massage blends in May. Initially, the aroma is quite subtle (and not at all similar to fresh basil), but when warmed in a massage blend it can quickly overwhelm other scents in the blend, so the trick is to add basil in very low quantities as it packs a punch to the olfactory senses.

Extracted by steam distillation using the flowering herb.

Ocimum basilicum is a relatively safe oil to use, but it is recommended to use it in low concentrations in a blend to avoid skin sensitivity. Avoid during pregnancy.

Read on for some of the therapeutic benefits of basil essential oil...

Benefits

  • A natural antiseptic, basil can be used in a blend for acne, or to help calm insect bits. The chemical makeup of basil is such that it is believed to help repel insects.

  • An antispasmodic, basil soothes and supports the digestive system and helps relieve muscle aches and pains.

  • Uplifting making it useful for depression, stress, and concentration.

  • Said to help alleviate nerve pain, headaches, migraine and soothe sinusitis.

  • An emmenagogue, assisting with absent, scanty, or irregular periods.

Fun fact - used in soaps, cosmetics, and perfumes, as well as major food items. Used in China for kidney and stomach ailments and in the Far East (especially Ayurvedic traditions) for respiratory problems as well as an antidote to insect and snake bites.
